Dr James Johnson is a consultant Anaesthetist who joined Northside Anaesthesia in early 2017. James grew up in rural Queensland and graduated from the University of Queensland Medical School in 2003. He worked in a variety of Queensland Hospitals as a junior doctor in a range of specialty areas including cardiac and respiratory medicine, intensive care, surgery and emergency medicine.

James undertook his training in Anaesthesia in Brisbane and became a fellow of the Australia New Zealand College of Anaesthetists in 2013. During this time he spent the majority of his time at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospitals establishing the experience that comes with working in a major tertiary trauma centre and complex obstetric hospital. James has further developed an interest in regional anaesthesia (nerve blocks) and point of care ultrasound skills. In 2013 he left Australia for a year to undertake additional training in Toronto Canada working with world leading clinicians and researchers at the Toronto Western Hospital, Princess Margaret Cancer Hospital and the Women’s College Hospitals. During this time he developed and authored a number of research publications and clinical trials related to nerve blocks and their benefits in improving post operative analgesia.

On returning to Australia in late 2014 James commenced working part-time at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospitals where he has continued to make a significant contribution to expanding regional and ultrasound anaesthesia skills, partnering to undertake further research studies and regularly teaching at local and national workshops. James currently works part of the week in private anaesthesia practice where he maintains a broad area of interests including Bariatric Surgery, General Surgery, Urology, Orthopaedics, Gastroenterology, Obstetric and Gynaecology.

When not working James has a wide range of interests and hobbies including camping, bush walking, snow sports and travel.
